She Is More

The “She is More” Series, is a temporary outdoor public art banner series that honors immigrant women to Santa Clara County. In 2023, Womanhood and Art Builds Community commissioned local artist Ruby Morales to participate in an East San Jose Artist Residency where she would design 12 illustrations based on the feedback and community stories collected during the project’s community engagement phase.

Many community members, especially the children and grandchildren of immigrant women came out to participate in our focus groups and tabling during community events to proudly share how they envision their loved ones celebrated through art. The feedback culminated into 12 vibrant illustrations–including a bilingual poem translated across three designs–that are currently on display as outdoor banners along Alum Rock Avenue between S Sunset Street and S 34th Street.

This temporary installation is created with the support of the ¡Si Se Puede Collective! and Abierto Program, a City of San Jose initiative that funds artistic activations of San Jose public spaces.
