Journey Through Womanhood

ENVISIONING THE FUTURE OF WOMENS RECOGNITION

Honoring Santa Clara County Women in Social Justice Community Leadership Arts Culture Technology Science Space Sports

How can we honor women’s stories through art in an ever-changing social & political landscape?

Journey Through Womanhood is a Santa Clara countywide series of augmented reality (AR) monuments, honoring the contributions of women to the region and beyond. In March 2025, we launched 20 AR artworks—the beginning of a monument project to commission 100 women artists to tell the stories of women that will be placed in site-specific locations throughout the County where they have made direct impact (see map below). Womanhood and its projects is made possible with capacity building through partnerships between civic entities, community-based organizations, educational institutions, and the power of place-based community-centered storytelling using art and creative technology.

The featured artists to launch the first 20 AR monuments are:

  • Kathy Aoki, honoring the Women in Social Justice and Community Leadership
  • Arlene Biala with Jayann Bella and Frances Mendoza, honoring Women in Arts and Culture
  • Kiana Honarmand, honoring Women in Technology
  • Pantea Karimi, honoring Women in Space and Science
  • Elba Raquel, honoring Women in Sports

Start the Journey!

The Journey Through Womanhood augmented reality (AR) monument markers have been installed across Santa Clara County in designated locations where our honored women have made direct impact with their contributions to advance their field. With our partnership with Kinfolk Tech, a nonprofit on a mission to create tools to reclaim narrative power through art and immersive technology, we are able to create more opportunities to accessibly memorialize and learn about women’s stories and their historical accomplishments at the palm of our hands. Through an immersive app experience that can be downloaded on your smart phones or tablets, users can interact and view the AR monuments, read artist statements and honored women bios, and access additional resources to enhance their learning experience.

There are multiple and accessible ways for explorers to journey through the AR series.
